American School, Early 19th Century Miniature Portrait of a Young Man in Military Dress with Gilt Braid and Buttons. Inscribed on paper within the opening on the reverse "To M. Pike by Robert Field." Watercolor on ivory, 2 3/4 x 2 1/4 in., in a gilt-metal pendant frame. N.B. Robert Field (1770-1819) was born in Gloucester, England, and died in Jamaica, West Indies. In 1794 he sailed for Baltimore on the Republic and painted the Captain's portrait. He was then painting in New York and Philadelphia, and in Washington in 1801, and moved to Boston in 1805 where he associated in the "First Circles." In 1808, he sailed for Halifax, Nova Scotia. In the United States he worked mostly in miniature, but his works in Nova Scotia were mainly in oil, and exhibited in London during 1818, listed as a portrait painter of Halifax.
