Description:

Engraved Powder Horn, America, mid-18th century, signed "Made by David Hoar in Cambridge," inscribed "Given to Stephen Dudley by his brother Joseph who died in his Majesties service in the 16th year of his age 1758," the inscription appears to have been done by two different hands, having all-over decoration including an officer on horseback, a unicorn, fox, fish, stag, mermaid, goose, floral scrolling vines, and geometric bands, the plug end is fitted with an inscription, "Jos Dudley his horn 1765," pen and ink on paper, under glass, the spout end is carved with a decorative ring and chamfered panels, (imperfections),lg. 19 3/4, dia. 3 1/4 in. Provenance: By descent through the Dudley family. Note: Massachusetts men fought for the British in the French and Indian War. Five thousand enlisted for the push into Canada led by General Wolfe in 1758, the year of Joseph Dudley's death.
