Description:

Model of the Steamer New Orleans, by C.R. Luscombe, 1899, of painted wood with metal stern wheel, with forward and aft cabins, painted decking, doors and windows, lg. 39 in.

Provenance: The property of a Northeastern Institution. The New Orleans was built at Pittsburgh in 1810 by Robert Fulton, Robert Livingston and Nicholas Roosevelt and was the first steamer to travel down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. Due to her construction, however, she was unable to travel upstream. Copies of letters between the parties are included with the lot.
