N.B. The brig's master and mate were Osborn Howes and David Cushman Jr. Born in Dennis, Massachusetts, Osborn Howes was the son of Captain Elisha Howes, who had distinguished himself in the War of 1812. The family moved to Dedham when Osborn was twelve. After spending time as a supercargo in Prussia, Howes got his first command of the brig Hebe in 1828. He took her from Boston to Brazil and Marseilles, and following these voyages bought a half interest in the brig. In 1831, in Smyrna, he loaded the vessel with figs in spite of a plague that raged there. More information is available in Kittredge's Shipmasters of Cape Cod.
