James Fulton Pringle (British, 1789-1847)

The American Ship Hannibal. Unsigned, ship identified on bow. Oil on canvas, 24 1/2 x 37 1/2 in., framed. Condition: Retouched, scattered minor losses, areas of craquelure, surface grime.

N.B. The Hannibal was built in Medford, Massachusetts in 1823 by Sprague and James for Lincoln and Co. The Lincoln house flag flies from the main mast. Pringle settled in Brooklyn, New York, and painted primarily marine works, executing commissions for shipbuilders and owners. The collections of the New York Historical Society, the Peabody Essex Museum, and the Mariner's Museum in Virginia, among others, include examples of Pringle's paintings. A catalogue raisonné of his work was begun in the 1970's.
