Frederic Roux (French, 1805-1870)

The American Packet Ship Germania. Signed and dated "Frederic Roux 1853" l.r., ship identified on bow, titled below. Mixed media including watercolor, gouache, and graphite on paper, sight 16 x 22 1/2 in., framed. Condition: Small tear u.r., scattered stains, overall toning, not examined out of frame.

N.B. The Germania, built by Fernald and Pettigrew of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, was one of Whitlock's Havre packets. Its captain was D.H. Wood. An incident associated with the ship was its rescue of the sole survivor of the ship John Rutledge, sunk by an iceberg in 1856. The story is recounted in Queens of the Western Oceans, pp. 328-329. The artist's trade card reading "Frederic Roux hydrographe et peintre au Havre en Decembre 1853" is affixed to the backing.
