Elder Family Portrait. Unsigned, identified and dated in plaque on frame reading "GRANDFATHER Col. Saml Elder 1805-1900 aged 95 years GRANDMOTHER Margaret Bell Elder 1817-1906 aged 89 years, painted 1850." Oil on canvas mounted onto Masonite, 32 1/2 x 42 in., framed. Condition: Retouched, craquelure.
N.B. The portrait descended in the family of the sitters, and, according to family documents, was painted by Rinehart of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Col. Elder and family lived in Ligonier, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Elder was the owner of the Good Intent (also known as People's Line) stagecoach company, a passenger line offering service between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia in fifty-six hours.
