Description:

CHASE, SALMON P. (1808-1873) Autograph Letter Signed, Washington D.C., June 22nd 1868, three pages, 4to, to Mr. John L. Martin, regarding his chances for nomination by the upcoming Democratic convention in New York and his opinions of that party, and expressing his platform on reconstruction, suffrage, and the military occupation of the South, (folds and miniscule breaks at bottom). "But I never supposed that anybody was bound to stick to me or with me when he thought me wrong; nor did I ever suppose myself bound to stick to or with others if I thought them wrong. I began my political life with a strong faith in the democratic and christian idea of equal and exact justice for all men and it is my expectations that I shall die in that faith. But while I believe in justice I don't believe in vengance. In my poor judgement confiscation & disenfranchisement of one side is a poor way to restore peace and good will among citizens who have been involved in a civil war with each other; but remain & must remain citizens of one country, if the country remains one."
