Relief-Carved Pine Plaque of Samson and the Lion, attributed to Ulysses Davis (1914-1992),Savannah, Georgia, with a blue-green painted border, ht. 13 1/2, wd. 12, dp. 2 in. N.B. For an example of Davis' later work, see lot 1092. Provenance: Aarne Anton/American Primitive Gallery. Literature: According to Jane Livingston and John Beardsley in BLACK FOLK ART IN AMERICA 1930-1980, (Jackson, 1982),p. 72, this work stood on a shelf among other relief carvings in Davis' Savannah barber shop. It is one of two such carvings of religious subjects which the artist produced in Fitzgerald, Georgia in the late 1930s.
