Description:

Carved Wood Head, attributed to Moses Ogden (1844-1919),Angelica, New York, a man with derby hat, with stand, ht. 4 7/8 in. N.B. Moses Ogden a wagon maker by trade and a Civil War veteran of the First New York Dragoons, collected root and burlwood forms and carved them into groups of fanciful figures. It seems that Ogden exhibited and sold his carvings at county fairs, and was enough of a local celebrity that the Angelica town photographer took several photos of the artist and his work, displayed in his home and his garden. After Ogden's death the carvings were collected in the 1930s and 40s by Clarence Bill, a local dealer, but were discarded by his heir. They were again rescued from the curbside by another dealer, and recollected by Richard Rockford, who researched Ogden and ultimately sold the collection to Peter Tillou. Additional information as well as xeroxed reproductions of the images of Ogden and his works are available. Provenance: Aarne Anton/American Primitive Gallery.
Estimate $900-1,000
